The "Monteregio di Massa Marittima" Wine Route wind sits way through the reclaimed land of the Colline Metallifere" (metalliferous hills) of High Maremma in the Grosseto district.The tourist itinerary includes the cellars of the wine and grape-producing businesses, working farm holiday businesses, wine shops, restaurants, local product producers and quality art and craft shops. The traveller on the Wine Route will find himself in a natural environment where Tuscany's characteristic traits meel with the strong Maremman personality. All the centres along the Route are historically rich and the three mini-routes lead to the discovery of numerous environmental, artistic and historic treasures. The fulcrum of the first mini-route, which also takes in the municipalities of Monterotondo Marittima and Follonica, is Massa Marittima, with its main square and historic centre providing extraordìnary examples of medieval town-planning. The Wine Route Information Centre is situated beneath the main square, in the rooms of the old Palazzo Bandini. The surrounding territory is full of interesting places: Accesa Lake, the medieval castles at Lecceta and Cugnano, the Longobord hot springs at Bagno del Re and Montioni national park are just some examples of places worth visiting.
The second mini-route winds its way mainly through the municipality of Roccastrada and is characterised by a plain crowned by the severe Colline Metallifere (metalliferous hills) upon which picturesque medieval villages rise; first amongst these is Montemassi, immortalised in Simone Martini's fresco "Guidoriccio da Fogliano". A visit to the Grape and Wine Museum ("Museo della Vite e del Vino") at Roccastrada is a must-here one can discover wine's secrets and the part played by wine in the Maremman traditions. The natural reserves "La Pietra" and "Torrente Parma" are also of interest.
The thìrd rnini-route covers the area between the coast and the main directrix of the Wine Route. lt includes the municipalities of Castiglione della Pescaia, with its fort protecting the coast-line, and Gavorrano and Scarlino, with their valuable castles and historic centres. Worth a visit the "Bandite di Scarlino"- a regional natural reserve-, the reserve at Diaccia Botrona and the archaeological zone of Vetulonia in the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia.
